ONE BODY

Over the past few years you undoubtedly saw the TV ads featuring the Army
logo – An Army of 1. The intent of the ad was to emphasize the solidarity and
singleness of the Army. Each soldier, one as vital as the next, woven together
as an indestructible unit would guarantee the success of the mission. You may also remember the famous novel written by Alexandre Dumas entitled
The Three Musketeers. It featured a trio of French musketeers named Athos,
Porthos and Aramis who remained loyal to each other as they fought a variety of
battles. Their cry, One For All and All For One, reverberated in the courts of
their enemies as they strode victoriously away from their conquered foes. The concept of such unity is actually a Biblical principle. The Apostle Paul
wrote in Romans 12:4-5 - “For as we have many members in one body, and all
members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and
every one members one of another.” He also wrote to the Corinthians to remind them that unity is the key to
spiritual victory. No schisms or divisions should be found in the “body” of
Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:14-21) “For the body is not one member, but many. If the
foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore
not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of
the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where
were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now
hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.
And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many
members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need
of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.” Tucked away in the instructions of Jesus to His disciples, just prior to His
death and their life-changing Upper Room experience, are these remarkable words:
“At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in
you.” (John 14:20) The thrilling reality of that pronouncement is the true unity principle of
the Christian family. We are able to be one because He is in us and we are in
Him. Without that formula there can be/will not be any unity in the body of
Christ. Without that formula our message is garbled and confusing. Without that formula our mission fails to accomplish all He intended. I pray the Lord blesses you today. Warmly, in His love and life, Roland Scroggins © 2007
