INVOLUNTARY SABOTAGE

The title of my Minute Message may seem somewhat contradictory. Let me explain.
Sabotage is "the deliberate destruction of or damage to any cause, movement, activity, effort, etc." (Webster)
Involuntary is "unintentional, accidental, not consciously controlled." (Webster)
The Apostle Paul writes a challenging "behavior modification" chapter (14) to the Roman Christians about the power of their choices pertaining to meat and drink. He cautions them about the danger of losing their testimony because of a conflict over an unimportant issue. In fact, he pointedly commands them to NOT be a stumbling block to anybody by having a judgmental attitude.
Then in verse number 16, he writes, "Let not your good be evil spoken of." Hence the title for this Minute Message - Involuntary Sabotage.
Sadly, I've seen too many "good" Christians (is there such a creature as a "bad" Christian?) sabotage their testimony and influence with destructive actions such as a judgmental attitude, a harsh rebuke, a haughty spirit or other kinds of put downs. Often they are unaware of the damage they've done and walk away thinking they have successfully defended the faith. What they don't realize is that they actually destroyed their testimony and ruined their opportunity for any further influence on that individual or group.
Paul's counsel is still appropriate for our time because differences of opinion still flourish in the church. Don't misunderstand me. Paul would never compromise the important doctrines of the Faith (nor should we) but he would and did caution us about allowing our prejudices or personal opinions to have the power to destroy our relationships and hinder our testimony opportunities.
Our faith in Christ is sacred and we need to be aware of the efforts of our archenemy to use any means to destroy that faith. If he can successfully tempt us to exhibit an "Involuntary Sabotaging" attitude he has won the battle without firing a shot.
In Christian love I urge you to be cautious and cognizant of how you "live out" your faith. As Paul wrote, "Don't give cause for your good to be despised." (Scroggins translation!)
I pray the Lord blesses you today. Warmly, in His love and life, Roland Scroggins © 2006
