DEADLY GAME

The world was saddened by the unexpected death of Steve Irwin, the "crocodile hunter." You have probably viewed one or more of the special wildlife programs for which he had become famous. He was a cautiously, daring young man who loved the world of animals and took viewers on exciting trips into that world. Honestly, I am still a little stunned that he is gone.
I thought about the dangerous kind of work he chose to do and how he faced death on numerous occasions. Poisonous vipers, crocodiles, insects, creepy crawlers, and a host of other potentially lethal creatures were the inspiration to keep him going in his career. He was a fun person to watch and listen to as he excitedly led us on excursions into the caves, holes, lairs, and territories of various wildlife creatures.
They say his death was a fluke - a rare and tragic accident. Perhaps.
I saw a very real and sad reality illustrated by Mr. Irwin's death. People do the same sort of dangerous daring in their spiritual life as they flirt with spiritual death by seeking out and investigating lethal sinful behaviors. Venturing into sin's territories, they playfully tease the viperous temptation and are unprepared for the rapidity with which the enemy's dart can pierce their heart.
God's Word warns us to be aware (cognizant) of the Satan's schemes and stratagems. Our enemy is ALWAYS on the lookout for opportunities to kill us. While we play, he is intent on our destruction. And, his attack on us is never an accident – it is always a planned event!
Be wise. Not foolish. Just as the ray's barb was deadly to Steve Irwin when it pierced his heart, sin's barb is deadly to us when it pierces our spiritual heart.
I pray the Lord blesses you today. Warmly, in His love and life, Roland Scroggins © 2006
