CATARACTS

“OK,” she said. “Cover your left eye and tell me what line you can read on the chart.” I gazed intently. ”Uh,” I responded. “I really can’t make out any of the letters. Is this a trick chart?”

Ignoring my sensible question, she said, “Cover your right eye and tell me what you can read.” I complied and my answer was the same as before.

“Well, Mr. Scroggins,” she remarked. “The doctor will be talking with you about cataract surgery on both of your eyes.”

“What,” I exclaimed. “You’ve got to be kidding. Cataract surgery?” My heart was racing and my vision was blurring from the excitement. “I can see just fine. I don’t need any eye surgery!”

“Hmmm,” the doctor muttered. “You haven’t been driving, have you?” Following that ridiculous query he continued, “You know, you’d fail the drivers exam if you tested right now.” From her chair across the room, my wife greeted that information with an audible gasp.

Anyway, the short version of this story is that my right eye will be done on October 31st (please Doc, no trick or treat) and my left eye will be done on November 7th.

The doctor explained that this problem has been developing for some time and I’ve simply learned to make adjustments for it. He said that my cataracts have formed slowly and have clouded the lens, which are supposed to be transparent. My vision has diminished as a result. The truth is that I don’t see clearly and I strain my eyes a lot to focus.

As usual, my spiritual antennae are always up and I perceived a significant lesson from this experience.

Sin, most often, creeps like a cataract across our spiritual eyes until our spiritual vision is cloudy. We are often unaware and unperceptive of it’s advancement until we find ourselves having to work harder to focus on spiritual truth. The chart (BIBLE) simply gets harder to “see” and all the while we are proclaiming that we see just fine.

The Holy Spirit (God’s Ophthalmologist) will remove sin’s cataract if we will make the appointment. He will do it with laser-like precision, without anesthesia and without error.

How’s your vision?

The Doctor is “IN.”

I pray the Lord blesses you today.

Warmly, in His love and life,

Roland Scroggins
