BEAUTY - IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER

In an article entitled “The Search For Lasting Beauty” author Laura Krauss Calenberg writes the following: “In America, $20 billion is spent annually on cosmetics; $300 million on cosmetic surgery; $33 billion on dietary products.” (Laura Calenberg is a New York City fashion model. She has traveled to 22 countries in her work as a model and has appeared on the covers of numerous magazines, including Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan and Brio. She has appeared in many ads for Saks, Nieman Marcus and Hanes. She is married to Jeff Calenberg, who is also a professional model, and has two wonderful children)
She writes about the frustrations and pitfalls of the physical appearance trap and urges her readers to learn about real beauty, which comes from a right relationship with God. It’s an interesting and inspiring article and worth your time to read. You can find it HERE. You’re probably wondering how or why I, as a man, would ever read such an article. To be honest, it must have been a “God Goggle!!” I was looking for some particular information and came upon the article. It pointed out a tremendous truth to me that I want to share with you.
People work tirelessly and spend small fortunes to cover the imperfections of their flesh. The intimidation of others, and their attitude about us, forces us to do whatever is necessary to improve our appearance. (If you don’t think you’re intimidated just consider how you really look when you’re home alone and not under the judging gaze of people.)
You see, the Bible verse is true: 1Sa 16:7 “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance but the LORD looketh on the heart."
The last part of that verse is the main point of my Minute Message today. We may be able to make our outward appearance more attractive by covering our imperfections but the Lord sees our inward person. If we have sin in our hearts (ugly spiritual imperfections) He knows the truth about us. If we have inner beauty (which comes from having a right relationship with God) He sees that too.
Which would you rather Jesus see when He looks on your heart? I pray the Lord blesses you today. Warmly, in His love and life, Roland Scroggins © 2006
